It’s that time of year when we are more aware of all the things for which we are thankful.  I am certainly thankful that our school year has been off to a good start -  we've been busy with a purpose!  Our vision is that "Nuffer Elementary is  a school with an unrelenting focus on learning.  Everyone is expected to succeed; no one is allowed to give up."  When we say everyone is expected to succeed, we mean not only students, but also teachers and parents.

We help students to be more successful by providing them with structured school-wide intervention 40 minutes a day, four times a week. Students who are English Learners receive 30 minutes of English Language Development five times a week.  Every student has access to the computer lab every week to work on skills through web-based programs.

We help teachers to be more successful through weekly team planning time built into the schedule every Wednesday for 40 minutes.  Our teachers also receive professional development training twice a month for two hours on Common Core Instruction and effective teaching strategies that are used schoolwide.

Lastly, we help parents be more successful by offering opportunities for parents to get involved in decision-making councils such as School Site Council and English Learners Advisory Committee.  Parent workshops will also be offered throughout the year to help parents help their children with academics.

These are just a few of the ways that we focus on learning and expect success.  When we don't ensure learning, our students are at risk of growing up and living in poverty, having poor health, and even possibly being incarcerated - those are stakes that we can’t afford. When we do ensure learning, we give our students unlimited possibilities in life - that's our purpose!

So yes; we're all busy turning over a new leaf and making small improvements that will lead to staggering long-term results; but more importantly, we’re doing it to make our students' lives better... and that’s something to give thanks for!
